Lunde and wife Marie died when his car fell off the ferry dock at Våge, between Ålesund and Åndalsnes. The incident was investigated because sabotage was suspected, but the conclusion was that it was merely an accident.〔Morgenbladet 19.oktober 2012, s.10.〕 The 2012 biography by Arntsen and Harestad does however conclude that accident was staged by the German occupiers who wanted to remove a bothersome minister.〔Arntsen, Jan Magne and Thor Geir Harestad (2012): ''Triumf og tragedie: historien om NS-minister Gulbrand Lunde'' (Triumph and Tragedy: The story about the NS-minister Gulbrand Lunde).
